Business Accountability – Necessary or a Buzzword?

by Dag Nybo on July 11, 2011

My colleagues and fellow Austin Growth Coach’s Dean Bogues, Scott Merritt and I often talk about Accountability. Just how important is Accountability to the work we do with our clients?

It’s a biggie. And not because accountability specifically means “conformity” or “behaving appropriately”…. The thought of being a well behaved professional isn’t a consistent motivator across entrepreneurs and business owners. However, the thought of performing well and achieving our goals means everything. If we get where we want to go in our lives (and our businesses), we feel enormous satisfaction and sometimes elation. Accountability leads to the checkered flag…

So as we head into the summer months, when we see and feel the opportunity to slip into over-relaxed habits and patterns, we must remember this.

  • If we regularly hold ourselves accountable to our goals, we will feel better, achieve more and feel more relaxed.
  • Relaxing doesn’t mean developing bad habits. It means being effective and productive when we’ve planned to be effective and productive.  It also means we can relax with extremely good conscience during the time we’ve set aside for relaxing. Our key to success is 100% on, 100% off.   If we do multiple things at once, we risk getting stuck in mediocrity.
  • Productivity and Success is not a sprint. If we don’t keep ourselves accountable today or even this week, we can get back to it next week.  Consistency will mean we are still on track for significant success this year, this decade and certainly during your lifetime.

We are all here on this earth exceed our own expectations, whatever they happen to be. American Bhuddist nun Pema Chodron states, “meditate like your hair is on fire”. That simply means whatever we do, we must do it with our full intention and focus. We’ll be glad we did.
